New York Post Cover: Dear Yankees, We Don’t Date Losers

Heading into Thursday afternoon, everybody knew that the New York Yankees had no shot against the Detroit Tigers. Based on the three prior games it was clear who the better team was. The only lingering bit of hope that Yankees fans were holding on to yesterday was that their squad had too much pride to be swept out of the ALCS. It couldn’t possibly end in such pathetic fashion, right? Right?

Wrong.

New York’s only real baseball team went out with a whimper on Thursday – losing Game 4 by a whopping seven runs. Much like the rest of the series, this one was never even close.

On Friday morning, the New York Post responded to the Yankees’ collapse with the most amazing cover ever.


Calling them losers? Check. Poking fun at A-Rod’s groupie drama? Check. The unabashed sense of entitlement that New York is known for? Check.

That cover literally had everything you would ever want on an occasion like this.

Watching his New York Yankees lose Game 4 of the ALCS to the Detroit Tigers wasn’t the worst thing that happened to Alex Rodriguez today. No, the worst thing that happened to A-Rod today, without question, was Kyna Treacy -- the model he allegedly flirted with -- realizing that she liked her 15 minutes of fame.

You will recall, a couple of days ago a story surfaced saying that Rodriguez spent part of his team’s ALCS Game 1 showdown trying to pick up some Australian model who was sitting nearby. The report came with a few sketchy pictures that didn’t prove anything and no real, verifiable info, but it was salacious and proved to be good for a few laughs.

Things got a little less funny on Wednesday, though, when somebody in the Yankees organization went out and confirmed to ESPN that A-Rod had in fact been trying to pick up some girl in the stands. The problem there isn’t that an athlete sought out groupies, obviously, it’s that his organization thinks so little of said athlete that they would publicly burn him like that.

And any hope A-Rod had of this story dying a quick and painless death this week dissipated today when the model he supposedly hit on, Treacy, did an interview with Inside Edition.



One dumb entertainment show down, 10 million to go.

Maybe now that the Yankees’ postseason run is over we can finally stop talking about A-Rod and his groupie drama. And by maybe, of course, I mean hopefully.

Alex Rodriguez has been terrible as of late, there is no denying that. He is an overpaid underperformer who has completely collapsed under the weight of everyone’s expectations. All that said, he is neither the first, nor last baseball player to not live up to his contract. It happens. The reason that he has been subjected to so much ridicule because of who he plays for.

Plain and simple: New York Yankees players are held to a higher standard.

Well, if a new report by Keith Olbermann is true, Rodriguez may not have to carry the burden that comes with being a Yankee for much longer. Via Olbermann (by way of Larry Brown Sports):

Sources close to both organizations confirm the Yankees would pay all – or virtually all – of the $114,000,000 Rodriguez is owed in a contract that runs through the rest of this season and the next five. One alternative scenario has also been discussed in which the Yankees would pay less of Rodriguez’s salary, but would obtain the  troubled Marlins’ reliever Heath Bell and pay what remains of the three-year, $27,000,000 deal Bell signed last winter.

Olbermann knows his baseball, but he also isn’t the general public’s go-to stop for breaking news. Understandably, folks took his initial report with a grain of salt. However, a follow-up by ESPN indicated that Olbermann’s suspicions weren’t entirely baseless.

What began as a casual, joking conversation between New York Yankees president Randy Levine and Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria about the possibility of Alex Rodriguez playing for the Marlins may develop into serious trade talks this offseason, according to a source with knowledge of the conversation.

According to the source, Levine and Loria discussed the possibility of A-Rod playing in Miami, his hometown, but characterized it as a joke between old friends.

According to the source, Loria said in his conversation about A-Rod with Levine, "Alex is Mr. Miami, it would be great if he played here for us."

To which Levine is said to have replied, "You can have him."

A second source with knowledge of Rodriguez' thinking said the likely only place Rodriguez eventually would accept a trade to is Miami.

So what are we to make of all this? For now, nothing. On one hand, the deals noted by Olbermann are a little too crazy to be taken seriously. On the other hand, the specifics he listed indicate that the discussion between Levine and Loria was a little more than just some jokes. You don’t discuss salary specifics when you're joking with friends. You don’t think up alternatives when you're joking with friends.

More likely than not, a serious tentative discussion was had by these two regarding how to unload their respective burdens. It wasn’t super detailed. Nothing is imminent. They were probably just feeling each other out, seeing what the other is looking for. At least that’s our completely baseless assessment of this.

For what it’s worth, Yankees GM Brian Cashman called Olbermann’s report false.

"I have had no discussions whatsoever with the (Miami) Marlins," Cashman said (via ESPN). "Certainly would never have any trade discussions under the circumstances. I certainly have not had any discussions with any GMs other than the pregame meetings with Dan Duquette with the Orioles, with the umpires and then with Dave Dombrowski (of the Tigers). But I've had no trade discussions, so false. 100 percent false."

Make of this situation what you will.

Our favorite talking hairpiece, Donald Trump, has found a new way to troll America. After spending the last three and a half years publicly wondering whether or not our first African-American President was really born here, he has now apparently decided to move on to a different topic. That topic? The New York Yankees.

A day after publicly proclaiming that Derek Jeter breaking his ankle in Game 1 of the ALCS was ‘karma’ for selling one of his apartments, Trump went on The Michael Kay Show and said this (via Larry Brown Sports):

“I would terminate his contract, personally,” Trump said. “I think George (Steinbrenner) would’ve done that. I would terminate his contract on the basis that when he signed, he didn’t say that he took drugs. Since he signed his contract, they found out that he took drugs. … He actually admitted that he took drugs. Now he’s not taking drugs anymore, and without the drugs, he’s a less than average player.”

The problem isn’t so much the substance of those comments, it’s the messenger. Trump suddenly becoming the world’s foremost authority on all things Yankees baseball is just the latest thing for people to hate about the Yankees. A-Rod is an admitted PED user. He is a less than average player now. But we don’t need Trump telling us that.

“I don’t think he’s an asset, I think he’s a liability to the Yankees,” Trump continued. “They’re paying him $30 million a year, and he strikes out every time he comes up in a playoff game. How about like $1 million instead of $30 million, because that’s what he’s worth?”

Again, all of that is true – but Trump being the one to say it just naturally makes you want to argue against the point.

Here’s to hoping that this guy finds a new segment of the population to troll in the coming days and leaves our sports teams alone.

Alex Rodriguez has had a really rough week. Beginning with his ineffectiveness on the baseball field and ending with an assortment of personal indignities, the highest paid player on the New York Yankees roster hasn’t had a single positive news item written about him in what seems like forever. In a way he deserves the criticism; in a way it’s sort of overstated.

The latest blow to Rodriguez’s image came on Tuesday, when the New York Post published a story indicating that, instead of just being useless during the Yankees’ Game 1 loss to the Detroit Tigers, he opted to spend his time flirting with some female fans. Per the report:

After being replaced in the bottom of the eighth inning in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series, the highest-paid Yankee openly flirted with a pair of pretty women two rows behind the dugout — even sending them a ball bearing a note asking for their phone numbers, a witness told The Post.

“I watched him flirt with two admittedly very cute young women nearby,’’ the witness said.

That report poses several problems for A-Rod. First and foremost, it looks bad that he takes time during a postseason game to allegedly flirt with groupies. Just in itself – that’s not great for your image. What compounds the damage, however, is the fact that the man already has a very hot girlfriend. Here is what she tweeted out yesterday, once word of A-Rod supposedly spitting game at some fans began to circulate.

On Wednesday, the Daily Mail identified the object of A-Rod’s affection as model Kyna Treacy. This is her:

If all of this is in fact true, you have to hand it to A-Rod. Dude can’t read a pitch to save his life anymore, but he can still scope out models from the dugout.

Donald Trump is a horrible guy, so it really shouldn’t surprise anyone when he says horrible things. Mind you, this is a man who (nearly four years later) maintains that the President of the United States obtained that position by illegal means because he isn’t an American citizen.

Again, he is a horrible guy. But just in case anyone forgot how bad he and the nonsense that he spews is, Trump made sure to send out a reminder to his 1.6 million Twitter followers on Monday.

Following Derek Jeter’s heartbreaking injury that put him out of commission for the duration of this postseason, Trump sent out these tweets:

Got that, folks? Jeter deserved his broken ankle. That’s the price you pay when you sell one of Trump’s lame apartments.

After getting a ton of backlash, Trump predictably tried to backpedal.

Alex Rodriguez has been subjected to a lot of ridicule over the past month. Despite the fact that he is the highest paid player on the New York Yankees roster, he has been pretty much useless during the squad’s postseason run thus far.

Thanks to some clutch decisions by Joe Girardi, the Yankees were able to overcome Rodriguez’s woes en route to beating the Baltimore Orioles 3-2 in the ALDS.

The ALCS has been a slightly different story, though. New York is currently down 0-2 to the Detroit Tigers, and Justin Verlander hasn’t even pitched a single game yet. Most of the Yankees’ struggles can be traced back to their awful offense and, obviously, A-Rod is a big part of that useless offense.

So, how is Rodriguez coping with his ineffectiveness? By hitting on fans in the stands, according to the New York Post. Via the report:

Instead of rooting on his teammates as they struggled to stay alive during the tense game at Yankee Stadium, A-Rod, 37, had a ball boy toss the young women a baseball inscribed with a message asking for their numbers.

“Alex was holding a pen and wrote a note on a ball which was thrown at the women by a ball boy,’’ the witness explained.

“The girls, who had already caught two balls, seemed bemused at first and tried to hand the ball to another fan, but other fans noticed the note on it and yelled at them to read it.

“The note asked them to write their phone numbers on the ball and throw it back,’’ the witness said.

“One of the girls, with darker blond hair, wrote . . . on the ball and threw it back at A-Rod, who gave her a big smile.”

Yes, Game 1 was the one that the Yankees wound up losing 6-4 – despite Raul Ibanez’s clutch late game heroics. And yes, Game 1 was also the one where Derek Jeter broke his ankle.

As of now, nobody on the Yankees has commented on Rodriguez’s extracurricular activities. Neither has his girlfriend, for that matter.

Monday night’s NLCS showdown between the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals will undoubtedly be remembered for Matt Holliday’s slide into Marco Scutaro. Regardless of whether you think the play was dirty or not, there is no denying that this particular sequence seemed to enthuse the Giants like nothing else in the series previously had. (Various players admitted this much after the fact.)

Scutaro stayed in the game and singled in two runs during the fourth inning, before ultimately exiting with a hip injury. X-Rays conducted after the game were negative. He will get an MRI on Tuesday.

No matter what happens as far as Scutaro’s health goes, the lingering question coming out of yesterday’s outing remains the same: was Holliday’s slide dirty? And if it was, does it warrant suspension?
