Joshua Van Auker Facing 2 Counts of Attempted Extortion for Allegedly Blackmailing Hines Ward

Joshua Van Auker, 26, found himself in police custody on Friday after he allegedly attempted to extort $15,000 from former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver, Hines Ward.

According to the Post-Gazette, Auker was arrested on Thursday of this week after he met with Ward’s assistant and tried to collect on a blackmail attempt. While details of what exactly was being held over Ward’s head remain murky at the moment, it appears to have had something to do Auker’s girl messing around with Ward.

The meeting was arranged via text message.

"The content of the text further indicated that should payment not be made, Josh Van Auker would sell or otherwise release materials he (Van Auker) possessed, thereby alleging that Ward committed the criminal offense of paying women for sex, and thereby also exposing Ward to ridicule or contempt," the complaint said.

As you can probably guess by the fact that Auker was arrested – detectives were monitoring the meeting. Once they had enough to get the guy, they lowered the boom and charged him with two felony counts of attempted extortion.

Ward retired this past season after 14 years with the Steelers.
